FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Will it hurt my child?
No. Your child will be putting his/her hand or foot into a luke-warm custard-like mixture. This will set in around 2-3 minutes, but will stay flexible enough to slide the hand or foot easily and cleanly out of the mould. The only part of the process that can be tricky for a young child/baby is keeping still for the 2-3 minutes it takes to get a good cast. With babies we achieve this by trying to take the casts when they are either sleeping, feeding or can be otherwise distracted by something they enjoy. With toddlers we can use toys, nibbles etc. to distract!
Could my baby be allergic to the mould material?
Our moulding material is an organic product (alginate based) designed for taking skin moulds (used extensively in the film-making and dental industries). It is non-toxic, non-allergenic and 100% biodegradable.
How long does the casting session take?
It can only take a few minutes to take the cast. However, we like to make appointments for an hour to enable you and your child to relax, talk through the process and for you to choose your frame and cast colour etc.
What should we wear?
Both you and your baby should wear clothes that you don't mind getting splashed if your baby kicks or flicks the moulding materials. Also, it is easier if your baby wears something that enables easy access to hands right up to the elbow and for the feet, access right up to the knee.
What if my baby/child won't hold still long enough to be cast?
Usually casts are taken easily as we try to arrange appointments for when your baby/child is likely to be at their most relaxed (eg. when baby is due a nap or feed). This is when the best casts, showing most detail are achieved. Should your child become very unsettled however, and we are unable to produce a satisfactory mould after a few attempts, we can offer you a second sitting at a later date, for a nominal fee (to cover extra materials used).
Do you do casting parties?
Yes, these can be arranged for groups of 3 or more, either at our premises in Earley, Reading or in the comfort of your own home (within a 5 mile radius). Ideal for friends, ante-natal or NCT groups.
What appointment times do you offer?
We usually arrange appointments for Tuesdays and Fridays between 9.30am-2pm at our premises in Earley, Reading. On occasion it may be possible to arrange appointments outside of these hours or on different days. Please contact us for advice.
When do I pay for my casts?
As from 1st June 2010 we will be asking customers to make full payment for their casts during the appointment. Payment by cash or cheques please.
When will my casts be ready?
Completed casts are usually ready within 21 days of your appointment. However, please advise of any specific deadlines and we will endeavour to accomodate.
